Are you reading?!!

Hi everyone. Here we are 12 days into January and how are you doing in keeping up with your reading through the Bible? It’s always a challenge to be disciplined and to read these chapters daily, but I know we’ll all learn so much during this journey! If you’re just getting on board, there are a few suggested ’schedules’ of how to accomplish reading through the Bible in a year right here on my portion of the website. This blog is here so we can encourage each other and share what we’ve learned. I’ll try to jot a few notes as much as possible, and can’t wait to hear from you. Read on!

I am glad this blog was started. About two months ago my wife and I commited to reading the bible cover to cover in 2007. So far I have only missed one day, but I made it up the next night, and the reason I missed was because I got home late from spending a night out with a group of guys from church.

One thing that has worked well for my wife and I is to put our 4 1/2 year old son to bed and then start on our reading together. This helps incase either of has questions and needs/wants to talk about something we read.

I have also started to journal following the recemandation by my pastor. I have found that has helped as well. For those of you who have never journaled, may I suggest the S.O.A.P method. I just love it. It works like this:
S = scripure - simply write down what you read.
O = observations - simply write down what stuck out at you.
A = application - how can you apply what you read and observed into your life.
P = prayer - follow with prayer and jot down where this reading lead your prayer.

I also want to thank PK for starting this blog and for the link to the schedules that she provided. I was making my own schedule and it was taking forever.

Hi PK!
I would really like to read the Bible along with you and everyone else this year. How do I access the schedules? I can’t find the link! Thanks!

How is everyone doing? Let me know how the reading is going, and don’t get discouraged if you fall a little behind. I’m finding little moments to read that I never realized I had before. Don’t forget to shut off the tv - it’s amazing how much time there is when you eliminate the competition. :)

Hi This is the 2nd year of reading the entire bible through. I find it exciting and challenging reading all the names which I am reading outloud this time and find that I am getting more out of God’s word. I just am beginning exodus tomarrow. I got my schedule from My Pentacostal Church. Reading HIS word strengthens me daily and I find enouragementin His promises, For EVERYTHING he says Is True and he keeps them.

PK, I picked up the read through the bible schedule at church in December and put it in my bible and with your encouragement and challenge I got it out and got started. I have really enjoyed going to biblegateway.com and reading along with the audio it is like the bible coming to life …so when you don’t think you have the energy to pick up your bible just login to biblegateway.com and enjoy.

I have been thinking about doing this for a while. I listen to KTIS everyday, and I’m traveling alot during midday when you are on the radio. So almost everyday I hear that reminder about reading with you. Well today I finally broke down and gave in :) I need to get into the Word more and knowing I can have people encourage me while we read the same things is kind of cool. So thanks for starting this :)

This is my first time reading the bible cover to cover. I have read parts of several of the books but never like this. I found Gensis so fasinating i could not put it down (except all the names, kinda confusing). I finish it a little a head of time….w/3 kids that is amazing for me :) I was so excited about it i asked my mom to join me and she said she would try! Yeah

Shannon - that is so cool that your mom is going to do it with you. Just think if we got entire FAMILIES reading through the Bible together every year and what future leaders we would have with that kind of a foundation. That’s fantastic. So now it’s the start of the weekend and we’re already into Exodus. I need to do a little catching up, as I went back into earlier portions of Genesis and re-read some chapters as they were filled with promises (like Terry mentioned above) and I wanted to make sure I GOT that! Plus we’ve been doing extra stuff around our house that took me out of synch with my reading. SO I’ll be doing some catching up this weekend. Blessing to you all, and let me know what God shows you while you read.

Hi PK!

I’m on board and reading with you! I’m half way through Exodous. I was saddened to hear the statement that less than 6% of people read there bible daily what a shame!! I have read and hear many of the stories before but I am getting different things out of them this time. I find myself sitting back in awe of the power, love and grace of our God. To anybody thinking about doing this, DO IT!!! And watch and see what our Lord reveals to you and feel His love!!

Hi PK,
I just started to read the Bible in a year. It has been very help full. I had found a web site that printed out how to read the Bible in a year (Positivethoughts.com)
I am in the process of getting things ready to go to school at Augsburg College in the spring.
I listen to KTIS all the time.
May all those that read this have a Blessed Day.

PK,

I’ve meant to read through the Bible many times in the past. I’ve started a few times but have never made it. God had laid it on my heart to do so this year but I again found ways of missing out. I want to thank you for the encouragement. I was listening to KTIS last week, heard your mention of the website and was convicted to follow through. Thanks again, God’s blessings to all. Be strong and take courage! We serve an AWESOME God!!!

Like several others I have tried to read the Bible on many occassions in the past but have failed. I look forward to trying this schedule to learn more about what God is saying to me first hand, rather than accepting someone else’s interpretation.

Thank you for the suggestion and for putting the schedule on your website.

God Bless you and the entire ministry at KTIS!

Hey P.K.,
I cheated! I broke my arm, so I got to spend a whole lot of time reading, for the first couple of weeks during the new year! I am already finished with Gen. Ex. Lev. Nim. Deut. Josh. Judges. Ruth, and I am starting on 1 Kings! Catch me if you can! I am reading through a different version, new perspectives, and I am reading all of the notes as I go. A good friend of mine did not break her arm, but she is six books ahead of me, she reads fast! Her name is Theresa.
Thanks,
Pastor Lee.

Well, like a lot of others I had started reading the Bible before. I made it through Exodus and then gave up. I had so many questions. I got a one year Bible for Christmas and I have found it much easier for me to read every day since it is all set up for me. I have not missed a day yet. Last night was the first night I did not finish reading my selection because I was so confused by a verse and I did not want to read anymore. I love Jason’s SOAP suggestion above and will give that a try but does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get some of my questions answered? Does anyone else struggle with questions about what they are reading?

Hi PK and Everyone,

How is everyone’s reading going? Jason thank you for the SOAP suggestion. Kendra somethings that have helped me is I got a Life Application Bible by Tyndale the New International Version. I like how it reads and the comments and insights that are provided I find really helpful. I also got multiple translations to find the one that read best for me. I don’t know what translation that you are using but find the one that is the most comfortable for you to read. For the most part I like the NIV but there are times that the KJV and the CEV read better. Some other books that I have found helpful are: How to Read the Bible for all its Worth by Fee and Stuart, What the Bible is all About by Mears, and the Zondervan Pictorials of the Bible. And most importantly to pray to Him to open my mind and for clarity. I hope that some of these ideas are helpful. I have a question for anyone. I recently got two co-workers to read through the bible with me and we want to start a bible study. Anyone have any suggestions for how to start or maybe some guides to do? God Bless.

Hi Justin,

My wife and I joined a bible study group almost a year ago and we love it. Here are a couple different things we have done. First, I have to say that Northwestern Book Store is a great place for study guides. In their bible section they have an entire rack of bible study guides that help guide you through different chapters of the bible. They ask thought provoking questions to bring to your group meetings and even provide some answers to questions you may have.

Another thing we are currently trying and seems to work well, is reading the specified reading for the week and journaling about what speaks to us and about questions we have. We then bring those things to the meeting and share them with each other. It works well for a couple of reasons. We don’t miss something that grabbed us because we are looking for answers from a study guide. We are able to share things that spoke to us, but others may not have grasped. And, best of all someone else may have the answer to the questions you have on things you are struggling with.

There are also some great video studies that also utilize workbooks that are really good. We watched Bill Hybels video/book series called Just Walk Accross the Room. It shows you easy ways to show your faith to others in a non-threatening way. The video/study guide were great tools that started some great conversations in our group.

I hope some of this helps.

Blessings to all of you.

Hi All!

Like so many, I’ve read parts but never cover to cover. I too am using Life Application, NLT…the notes bring it home!

For the 1st time, rather than a book of stories, it feels so real…history and creation all in one.

Good luck, enjoy your reading…let the Spirit grow!

I too am reading the Bible with you. This is the 2nd time our church has gone through Today’s Light Bible. I read my New Living Translations like some of the other readers. I like the comments, notes & overviews written to help put the application closer to your heart when reading.

Thanks you for your ministry and love for ZGod & His people. We need things like this to keep us connected.

I’m so excited people are encouraging each other to be in God’s Word…because He is the Word and He offers such an abundance of good things! I want to encourage you too! God showed me about five years ago the importance of being in His Word everyday. It became really clear when I realized that the manna God gave the Israelites each day was the perfect amount of what they needed …if they stored or failed to gather it fresh each day it would start to stink and become infested with maggots…well my life (and me in it) starts to stink too when I don’t receive my manna from God (the Word) everyday. I can’t store up all of God’s goodness on a Sunday church service or Tuesday night Bible study because I NEED HIM EVERYDAY! Through my obedience (and isn’t what that He wants from all of us…just like the Israelites?) to spend time with my Lord everyday God has blessed me with a radio ministry called EVERYDAY MANNA! It is so incredible to “see” God work and so that’s what I share…my journal of stories on how God works in my life…every single day! Please come visit me at debbiegriffith.com and share with me what God’s doing in your life! Joy in your journey!
Debbie

[...] Now that I’ve been back in the U.S. a couple of days, I’m busy reflecting on what I saw and learned while I was there and it’s very difficult to explain in a brief way! I know that reading my Bible will be a very different experience as I can put places and culture to the words on the pages and it will be much more alive to me. I realized also that in my quest to read through the Bible in 2007 (more here and here) I was focusing more on staying with a dedicated schedule and was perhaps not reading as much as I need for actual content.
